Lanternier & Co., Limoges, France. According to the complex series of marks on the bottoms, they were made for the Blanchet & Lazard store in Paris in the 1930s. Both cups and saucers are octagonal (8-sided). The cups measure 3.25 inches wide across the rim and sit 2-1/8 inches high. The saucers are 5-5/8 inches wide. The pieces are richly decorated with thick gold toothed trim around the rims, a gold verge on the saucers, gold rim and handle on the cups, and 4 elaborate gold filigree designs on the saucers and 5 on the cups. The cups and saucers are in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing, and just a bit of light wear to the gold trim (mainly on the verge of the saucers). There are no utensil marks or scruffs. There are several different marks on the pieces. The cups are marked “Blanchet & Lachard | Paris | 12 Avenue de l’Opera.” Two of the saucers have the same mark, but also have a green mark for “Limoges France.” The third saucer has the most detailed marks. There is a green mark for “Limoges | France | Unique.” The second mark is a red and blue shield with green wreath and banner for France, a number (perhaps 17), and a red mark for “A. Lanternier & Co. | Limoges.”Blanchet & Lachard was a high-end store offering silver, faience, crystal, and porcelain, located at 12 Avenue de l’Opera in Paris. The store was known as the Magasins de l’Union, and an excerpt from the newspaper Le Matin (Paris, 1884) reviews the store: “Elegance and comfort of the table, this is what one finds in the department stores of the Union, 12, avenue de l’Opéra, first class house founded in 1856 and managed by Messrs. BLANCHET and LACHARD.”The Limoges Unique mark was created in 1929 by the union of Limoges porcelain manufactures (l’Union des Fabricants de Porcelaine de Limoges). This label was to certify that the item marked by it is a genuine Limoges porcelain product. The France wreath mark of A. Lanternier & Co. France Limoges was used ca. 1929 to 1939.Please note the price includes USPS Priority Delivery (with insurance) shipping within the continental US. less
