Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Paintings from the USSR was a 1973 exhibit that featured 41 paintings from the Hermitage and Pushkin … more Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Paintings from the USSR was a 1973 exhibit that featured 41 paintings from the Hermitage and Pushkin museums and included 7 by Henri Matisse, 7 by Paul Gauguin, 6 by Pablo Picasso, 5 by Paul Cézanne, and 3 by Vincent van Gogh. The artwork featured on this lithograph poster is “Les Capucines a La Danse” aka “Nasturtiums with the Dance II” by Matisse. A very limited number of these posters were created for the Kimbell. Very rare. The exhibit was only shown in 4 venues:M. Knoedler and Co., New York, May 3–June 3, 1973Los Angeles County Museum of Art, June 13–July 8, 1973Art Institute of Chicago, July 18–August 12, 1973Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, August 22–September 16, 1973 (last dates of the tour)Negotiations with the Soviet Union, held privately by Dr. Armand Hammer allowed these works to be shown in the United States for the first time. The loan was made through M. Knoedler and Co., New York, in which Dr. Hammer held a controlling interest. His own collection had been on view in Leningrad and Moscow for several months and created the negotiating power to bring this exhibit out of the USSR. This poster is significant both in the art world but also politically because it is a product of the policies of detente that began to exist with the now defunct Soviet Union after Leonid Brezhnev and Richard Nixon met during Brezhnev’s June 1973 visit to the USA.Poster is mounted on backing board. There is some slight bubbling in places where the adhesive has failed over the years, but otherwise this is in excellent condition, colors are still vibrant. Poster dimensions are 36”h x 19”wThis poster will be shipped mounted on its original backboard with NO frame. We recommend a custom reframe to preserve this unique piece. less
