Created in 1991. Signed and titled on the verso. Joanne Lyon Gallery with Susan Duval Aspen Colorado gallery tag also on verso. Retro images are printed on metal, collaged, and intricately nailed down on a flat surface with steel brads to create a unique assemblage. Vintage advertisement on tin packaging is used with new imagery created by the artist. When collaged it brings together objects, ideas, imagery and typography from disparate time periods and locations within a singular moment. From a private collection. Dimensions: 17”h x 17”w x 1”d. In very good condition. Tony Berlant (1941- ) is best known for his painterly collages and metal cubes. He broke into the art scene after winning the Los Angeles Contemporary Art Council’s New Talent Purchase Award in 1964. Berlant was instrumental in establishing the aesthetic sensibility of the West Coast Pop Art movement. He was part of the seminal 1963 exhibition Pop Art USA at the Oakland Museum of Art, one of the earliest exhibitions of Pop Art that also included Berlant’s contemporaries Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Claes Oldenburg. Berlant has exhibited across the United States, with solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Works by Berlant are held in numerous prominent collections, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; Art Institute of Chicago; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
