Martinez’s hyperreal sculptures are hot sculpted glass hand-molded entirely by the artist. The piece is signed and numbered on the base by the artist. Each sculpture is unique. Dylan Martinez combines several glassblowing and sculpting techniques to form hyperrealistic ‘water’ bags from molten glass. Through these works, Martinez creates scenarios that obscure the viewer’s interpretation of reality and illusion. “The trapped movement of the rising bubbles and the gesture of the forms convince the eye that the sculptures are just as they seem,” says Martinez. “What is fascinating is that our desires often override our true perception of reality, and you believe what you think is visible as the truth.” To begin, Martinez sculpts the solid glass or “water” in each bag. Next, he adds a blown bubble to the top, smoothing it out before hand-sculpting each fold and wrinkle. Once complete, the sculpture is placed in an annealing oven at 950° F and allowed to cool for 120 hours. “Through my artwork,” Martinez explains, “I challenge the viewer’s expectations by manipulating light, space, and the optical properties of glass..” While influenced by traditional techniques in glassmaking, Martinez constantly strives to discover novel approaches to exploit the material and create a lens to view the world afresh. Dylan Martinez earned his MFA in Glass at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. He has studied with master craftsmen across the U.S. and abroad, including a month-long residency working with Venetian glass masters in Murano, Italy. His sculptures are sought after internationally, with exhibitions in the United States, Italy, France, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Taiwan, and Singapore. His artwork has been featured in several publications, such as Elle Decoration UK, American Craft Magazine, Interior Design Magazine, and Aesthetica MagazineHyperrealism, realism, hyperreal sculpture, glass sculpture, sculpture art, glass art, still life, water bag, trompe l’oeil, art and design, home accessories, tableware, contemporary art, contemporary sculpture less
